If you have installed DPM 2012 Evaluation and have decided to purchase and have obtained a product key, you might be wondering “where do I enter the product key to turn the evaluation to a full product”? Short answer: you can’t.
In order to enter your product key in an existing evaluation version of DPM 2012, you must upgrade DPM2012 to retail and in the process you can enter a product key. Unfortunately, this yielded the following error:

DPM Error when upgrading from Evaluation to Retail
In order to successfully upgrade DPM 2012 to retail (as of May 20, 2013), the following steps must be carried out:
- Open a command prompt on the DPM machine and type the following to backup your existing DPM database: dpmbackup –DB -targetLocation [PATH-TO-SAVE-BACKUP]
- Once the backup is done, using SQL Management Studio, remove the DPM database (make sure you have a backup just in case…this step was necessary or retail version would later fail when configuring SQL)
- Uninstall DPM 2012 Evaluation
- Install DPM 2012 Retail (enter the product key that you wish to use)
- Once install finishes, type the following to restore your DPM backup: DPMSync -RestoreDB -DBLoc [PATH-TO-DPM-BAK-FILE]
- After the previous step finishes, sync the database by typing: DPMSync -sync
- Open DPM 2012, everything should be just like before except now you are using the retail version
